Cambodian People’s Party Dominates Local Council Elections Across Multiple Tiers

PHNOM PENH, June 5, 2024 – The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) secured a majority of the seats in the recent Capital, Provincial, City, District, and Khan council elections conducted on May 26, 2024. The elections, as reported by the National Election Committee (NEC), saw the CPP leading, followed by the Khmer Will Party (KWP) and the National Power Party (NPP).

In total, the elections included 559 seats for Capital and Provincial Councils and 3,641 seats for City, District, and Khan Councils across 1,652 communes and 209 cities, districts, and khans. The CPP captured 504 seats in the Capital and Provincial Councils and 3,257 seats in the lower tiers, evidencing a strong preference for the ruling party. Notably, the CPP claimed all seats in the Capital and Provincial councils of several provinces including Mondulkiri, Pursat, Preah Sihanouk, Takeo, Pailin, and Oddar Meanchey.

According to NEC results, the KWP garnered 1,282 votes, translating to 47 council positions with significant victories in Prey Veng and Thbong Khmum provinces. The NPP received 276 votes, appointing them eight council members. In the City, District, and Khan council elections, the CPP's strong performance continued with 9,950 votes, equating to 3,257 councillors, of which 661 are women, inclusive of 209 chairmen and 3,048 members. Meanwhile, the KWP secured 1,289 votes for 312 members, including 34 women, though it failed to clinch any chairperson positions. The NPP achieved 282 votes, resulting in 69 councillors, including five women, but also did not gain enough support for chairmanship.

Other parties such as the Royalist FUNCINPEC Party and the Khmer United National Party had minimal impact, with FUNCINPEC winning just two district councillor seats in Kampong Thom and Khmer United National Party securing one councillor position in Banteay Meanchey province.

The fourth election of the Capital, Provincial, Municipal, District, and Khan Councils was conducted smoothly at 209 polling stations nationwide, with an impressive turnout of 11,598 voters, which accounts for 99.79 percent of the eligible 11,622 voters.
